Since the MrMcGregor fence doesn't protect against insect pests I've added the use of row covers to "hide" certain crops from pests. I originally started using row covers to protect my early plants from the cool spring temperatures and get an early jump in the garden. That works very well in the spring and extends the fall growing season as well. Now I find that cucumbers, squash, broccoli, and cauliflower don't have problems from insect pests like cabbage loopers when they're covered by row covers. Of course the covers have to be opened over squash and cukes once they blossom so bees can pollinate their flowers.
